Mastering Google Ads Character Limits: The 2023 Edition

Posted on November 10, 2023
No Comments

As of shinetechee last knowledge update in January 2022, I can provide you with some general information on character limits for Google Ads. However, please keep in mind that Google may have made changes or updates to their ad formats and character limits since then. To get the most up-to-date information, I recommend visiting the official Google Ads support documentation or checking for recent articles and guides.

Here’s a general overview of character limits for some common ad types:

  1. Expanded Text Ads (ETA):
    • Headline 1: Up to 30 characters
    • Headline 2: Up to 30 characters
    • Headline 3: Up to 30 characters (optional)
    • Description 1: Up to 90 characters
    • Description 2: Up to 90 characters
    • Path fields: Up to 15 characters each (optional, used in the display URL)
  2. Responsive Search Ads (RSA):
    • You provide multiple headlines and descriptions, and Google’s machine learning system will test different combinations.
  3. Display Ads:
    • Headline: Up to 90 characters
    • Description: Up to 90 characters
    • Logo image: 100×100 pixels
    • Image (landscape): 1200×628 pixels
    • Image (square): 1200×1200 pixels
  4. Call-Only Ads:
    • Business name: Up to 25 characters
    • Headline: Up to 30 characters
    • Description: Up to 90 characters
    • Phone number: Your business phone number
  5. Video Ads:
    • Video title: Up to 70 characters
    • Video description: Up to 175 characters
    • Display URL: Varies
  6. Shopping Ads (Product Listing Ads):
    • Title: Up to 150 characters (though it’s best to keep it concise)
    • Description: Varies depending on the platform and ad format
  7. App Install Ads:
    • Headline: Up to 25 characters
    • Description: Up to 90 characters

Keep in mind that character limits may vary depending on the specific type of ad and where it’s displayed (e.g., search results, display network, mobile, etc.). Google may also update their ad formats and character limits, so it’s essential to check Google’s official guidelines and documentation for the most current information.

Additionally, ad performance and relevancy are just as important as meeting character limits, so ensure that your ads are well-crafted and engaging to attract your target audience effectively.
